FAQ
All cosmetic tattoo appointments are completed across two appointments spaces 4-8 weeks apart. Your second appointment is a perfecting visit where your artist will go over the brows once more to lock in the colour, this also allows your artist to make necessary adjustments if required.
Please make sure you have enough time to complete a proper permanent makeup procedure. You should plan on 2.5-3 hours in the salon. This time includes consultation, paper work, proper numbing, procedure, aftercare instructions and pictures. None of these activities should be rushed. Follow up procedures usually do not require the same amount of time.
It is considered a permanent treatment since colour is implanted into the dermis and can not be washed off with conventional face wash or makeup remover. However, it will fade over time and it’s recommended to set up a follow up visit once a year or every other year to do adjustments on shape if desired and/or for colour. Frequency of touch-ups depends on a number of factors.
Please NOTE that final results can NOT be guaranteed as each unique skin type will hold pigments differently and break down at a different rates. We will re-evaluate how your skin has received the pigment at your touch-up appointment and make any changes necessary. Touch-ups are normal for permanent makeup procedures, with each new procedure requiring 2 visits. The initial procedure followed by 1 touch-up procedure about 4-6 weeks later. In some cases additional touch-ups might be required and additional charges will apply.
Aftercare
It is important that you remember you have had a tattoo procedure completed, as the anaesthetic wears off the lips will start to feel tender and may have a stinging sensation. Swelling, bruising and redness may all occur but will subside within 24-48 hours.
You can expect for your lips to look darker than what the healed result be which can make
them feel big and bold, this will only last a day or so until the swelling goes down.
The lips will eventually start to scab and peel – This will feel like the colour is coming off the lips. Please do not pick at the scabbing as this will pull out the pigment. Once the scab lifts naturally the colour will start to look a lot lighter, don't panic as this is just a result of the healing process. The colour will come back around week 2-3 after the procedure.
Over the next 10 months or so your lips will start to fade due to the colour and tone of your skin, to maintain the colour of your tattoo we recommend completing colour boost sessions every 10-18 months initially, then pushing them out to 18-24 months and so on (colour boosts are completed across two sessions spaces 6-8weeks apart).
To keep your tattoo and lips in the best condition we recommend using a hydrating lip balm daily.
Sun and salt water are your biggest concerns, it is important to apply a little Vaseline to the lips before swimming at the beach or chlorinated pools.
To assist with your aftercare, you will need to purchase:
- Lysine Supplement – to limit chances of a cold sore break out
- Cotton tips
- After art tattoo cream (available from reception or at www.feathertouch.co.nz)
- Alcohol and fragrance-free baby wipes
For the first two weeks after each tattoo appointment, please avoid the following to ensure the best results of your tattoo:
- Getting your lips wet – Tap/Shower water 7 days after & Chlorine or salt Water for 2 weeks,
- Facial cleansers, makeup products or makeup remover on the lips
- Any activities that cause excessive sweating.
- Sun exposure
Please remember it takes a full six weeks for your lips to heal. Your lips may feel healed but it is important to continue to follow all our aftercare steps during this time:
- Immediately after your tattoo treatment, wipe your lips (every 10 minutes) for an hour.
- Once the hour has passed, continue to wipe your lips, and apply a thin layer of After Art every hour for the remainder of the day.
- From day 2 onwards, wipe the lips with a baby wipe and apply After Art 4x a day (morning, lunch, dinner & before bed) to keep them hydrated.
- Around day 3-7 days the dry skin on your lips should start to flake off. During this time, it is vital that you do not pick the flakes or dry skin off your lips but let them fall off naturally.
- If by chance you happen to break out in an excessive amount of cold sores, please stop all aftercare and focus on treating the cold sore virus by visiting your local pharmacy. If any unusual redness, excessive itchiness, tenderness or swelling appear on the tattooed area please give us or your GP a call immediately.
